Sudanese medical team in Asmara

Special ophthalmic surgical service rendered in Asmara in collaboration with Sudanese medical team

Asmara, 17 Sudanese Medical TeamSeptember 2013 – A special ophthalmic surgical service was rendered in Asmara from the 14th to the 17th of this month on the basis of a collaborative venture between the Administration of the Central region and the Health Ministry’s regional branch, as well as the Sudanese Al-Bassar Medical Team. A total of 500 patients from all over the region have become beneficiaries of the opportunity, according to reports.

Dr. Andebirhan Tesfatsion, Acting head of public health in the Central region, pointed out that the government has been exerting persistent endeavors towards eradication of blindness, and that the current campaign provided groundwork for exchange of experience.

A member of the Sudanese medical team, Dr. Al-Semewil’al Mohammed, indicated that this is his second visit to Eritrea, and expressed appreciation for the availability of the necessary facilities in connection with ophthalmic service, besides the commitment of the medical personnel and the soundness of the strategies in this regard.

Among the beneficiaries, Ms. Weini Kahsai said that she has been enduring blindness for the past 9 years, and that she is at present in a position to witness better sight. Likewise, Mr. Idris Ferej, who has been suffering from blindness over the past 30 years, expressed satisfaction with eyesight vis-à-vis the free medical service thus provided.

The campaign also involved outpatient service for more than 4,000 individuals in the region, while the Sudanese team also conducted surgery on 460 patients at Gash-Bakra Referral Hospital, in addition to rendering outpatient service to 3,500 others.
